After the first real day of wandering around and getting lost, I decided to meet up with some couch surfers. We met up at a cafe in Thamel, the tourist district, shared some stories, and then decided we wanted to visit Pashupatinath together, East of Kathmandu. A little miscommunication with the taxi driver later and we ended up West of the city, at Swayambhunath, aka the Monkey Temple.
Swayambhunath is a mix of Hindu temples and Buddhist stupas that sit on top of a hill overlooking Kathmandu. Our first view was incredible, thousands of prayer flags stretching far distances from tree to tree. A massive roof over our heads. There were many festivities going on with dancing and musical instruments. Through a maze of shops and craftsmen we reached the main square with the large stupa surrounded by Hindu temples, all overlooking the city.
